If you think you know the history of World War II, prepare to be surprised. In Freedom Fighters, the video game developed by the authors of Hitman 2, it is not the Americans who defeat the Germans, but Russia. The communist state par excellence is the first to develop the atomic bomb and uses it without hesitation to raze Berlin to the ground. Not happy, the reds declare war on the rest of Europe and conquer all the countries by force, even going beyond the oceans and invading America. New York City is under their control and the US military is in disarray. The only hope of reversing the situation is a group of insurgents known as the Freedom Fighters.

The plot of Freedom Fighters

Freedom Fighters is a third-person action game set in an alternate New York during the invasion of a foreign superpower. The protagonist is Christopher Stone, a simple plumber who finds himself involved in the resistance after witnessing the kidnapping of his brother and a woman by the Russians. The woman will reveal herself to be Isabella Angelina, the leader of the Freedom Fighters, and Christopher will decide to join the fighters to save the two hostages and liberate the city.

The game is divided into eight chapters that represent the stages of the story, and each chapter contains multiple missions, for a total of 19. The aim of each mission is to reach a strategic building and replace the Russian flag with the American one, to indicate taking the lease. In addition to this there will be secondary objectives, such as freeing hostages, destroying enemy weapons or vehicles or activating switches.

The strong point of the game is the system of recruiting and commanding companions. Christopher can gain charisma by performing heroic deeds and use charisma to recruit other rioters. The maximum number of companions depends on the difficulty level chosen, but can go up to 12. Christopher can give simple orders to his allies, such as follow, attack or defend.

The game also offers a multiplayer mode for the console versions, where up to four players can compete in maps based on campaign missions. The aim is to capture as many flags and bunkers as possible before time runs out.
